Valentine

Formal shot of my complete quilt. I decided to add a little more hand stitching in the hot pink area, then took it outside to photograph in natural light. Size is approximately 10" x 12". I forgot to measure it, it's a Valentine for Kim so it went home with her last night.

I was really inspired by the current (Feb/March) issue of Quilting Arts. There are a lot of great technique articles, things I want to try. You can see many influences in this piece. The use of the crow and basic layout was inspired by Jane Davila. The hand stitching is from Laura Wasilowski's article. I used my Shiva Paintsticks for some gold touches to my hand dyed fabric on the center green piece. My original plan was to repeat the gold in a word from the technique described by Deborah Boschert, but the gold leaf I had was too thick and didn't work so I'll do that one on another piece. The gold from the paintsticks was the first thing I did, and ended up being the least successful part of this piece since the gold didn't get repeated, but I couldn't think of a fix for it.

I really like birds in small quilts, and may have to do another piece with my crow.

Oh, and there's a great article by Cynthia St. Charles and using glue gel resist that I want to try.

I was trying to decide on a detail shot of this piece, but nothing really stood out, of course if you want to see more detail, just click on the picture for a larger view.

Critique would be appreciated.

  1. Isn't it wonderful how a few hand stitches change the surface of the quilt? Yours is beautiful!

  2. I just love this little piece. It has so much interest that I could look at it for a long time and still see something new.

You also reminded me I haven't looked at my new issue of Quilting Arts yet. It got put away when I was having company and I forgot about it.

  3. I love your crow! How cool that you found inspiration from a variety of sources and made something uniquely your own.
